Orthodontic retainers Sydney CBD.

Long-term retention after Invisalign, clear aligners and fixed braces.

Dr Neil Lutton discussing digital treatment planning with a patient

After orthodontic treatment

Keeping teeth in their corrected position.

Teeth can continue to move throughout life. Retainers help maintain the result achieved with Invisalign, other clear aligners or fixed braces.

The type and wear schedule depend on the treatment completed, the stability of the bite, gum health, previous spacing or crowding and the patient’s individual risk of relapse.

Types of retainers

  • Clear removable retainers
  • Fixed bonded retainers where appropriate
  • A combination of fixed and removable retention

Replacement retainers

Retainers can wear, crack or stop fitting properly. Contact the practice promptly if a retainer is lost or damaged, because teeth may begin to move.

Digital records

Where digital scans are available, they can assist with comparison and replacement planning. A new scan may still be required if teeth have shifted.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions.

How long do retainers need to be worn?

Long-term retention is usually recommended because teeth can move throughout life. Your dentist will provide an individual wear schedule.

What should I do if my retainer no longer fits?

Do not force it. Contact the practice so the fit and tooth position can be assessed.

Can a bonded retainer break?

Yes. If a wire becomes loose or breaks, arrange a review promptly.
